Spenfield House was constructed in 1876 by George Corson, the architect who also designed the Grand Theatre in Leeds. Corson was commissioned by James Walter Oxley, son of Henry Oxley a senior partner in the bank of William, Williams, Brown & Co. The house remained the property of the Oxley family until 1948, when it was passed to Leeds City Corporation and then in 1974 to Yorkshire Water. The Greenalls Group Plc acquired the house in late 1997.
